What the Universal Auditor is
It is a single tool with ten audits that small and medium-sized businesses, accounting practices, finance teams, procurement, quality and operations use every day. Instead of rebuilding formulas and pivot tables every month, you pick the type of audit, enter a few details or drop in the spreadsheet you already use, and get a list of explained findings. Quick mode infers the columns and applies recommended rules; advanced mode opens tolerances, weights, filters, criteria and scope for anyone who needs professional traceability.
The ten audits
| Audit | What it checks | Input |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate payments and invoices | Finds repeated entries by document, supplier, amount and date, separating exact duplicates from possible ones. | Spreadsheet |
| Stock and count differences | Compares system stock with the physical count by item and location, and calculates shortages, surpluses and their estimated value. | Spreadsheet |
| Audit checklist | Use a ready-made sector checklist or build your own, with weights, evidence, photos, owners and due dates. | Form |
| Bank reconciliation | Matches the bank statement (CSV, Excel or OFX) with your cash book and separates matched items, suggestions and open items on both sides. | Spreadsheet |
| ISO 9001 self-assessment | An educational checklist in our own words, organised by clauses 4 to 10, to map evidence, gaps and actions. | Form |
| Supplier evaluation | Score suppliers on quality, delivery, price, documentation and service, with weights, a ranking and an improvement plan. | Form or spreadsheet |
| 5S inspection | A guidance questionnaire for the five S's, scored 0 to 5, with photos, actions and comparison with earlier inspections of the same area. | Form |
| Process FMEA | A failure-mode worksheet with severity, occurrence and detection, optional RPN, actions and residual risk. | Form |
| Audit sampling | Traceable, reproducible selection of items: simple random, systematic or stratified, with the seed recorded. | Form or spreadsheet |
| Financial anomalies | Flags unusual amounts, round amounts, out-of-hours entries, repeats, new counterparties, sudden jumps and gaps in numbering. | Spreadsheet |
How it works, step by step
First choose the audit. Then upload a CSV or Excel file or, for bank reconciliation, an OFX file from your bank; you can also paste cells copied from a spreadsheet or start with the sample data. The auditor detects headers, separator, encoding, number format (1,234.56 or 1.234,56), date order and debit and credit columns. When something is ambiguous, such as the date 03/04/2026, it stops and asks you to confirm in the Check step, where you see a preview of the first rows as interpreted. Then click Analyse: the calculation runs in the background, with a progress bar and a cancel button. Finally, review each finding, record your decision and export.
How to read the findings
Each finding states the rule that produced it, the fields involved, the reason in plain language, the evidence (file lines, amounts, differences) and that rule's limitations. Severity helps you prioritise but is not a conclusion. You mark each finding as confirmed, dismissed or pending and can add notes; your decisions still apply if you analyse the same data again. Findings can become items in the action plan, with an owner, a due date and a status.
Formulas and care with numbers
Financial amounts are converted to whole pennies or cents (or the smallest unit of each currency) before any addition, which avoids the rounding errors common in spreadsheets. Different currencies are never added together: totals are shown separately by ISO code, such as GBP, USD or EUR. Rows that could not be read are not silently corrected: they are left out of the analysis, counted in the summary and can be downloaded as CSV for correction, without changing your original file. For duplicate payments, the potential amount counts only the extra copies in each group.
Privacy: everything stays on your device
Reading files and every calculation happen in the browser. No spreadsheet, amount, supplier name, result or photo is sent to the server, to web analytics tools or to artificial intelligence services, and this page does not load adverts inside the tool. Audits are saved automatically in this browser, with a saved indicator. Clearing site data, using a private window or changing browser can delete that history, so export JSON backups. For sensitive data, use temporary mode, which does not store spreadsheets, or protect the audit with a password.
Everyday examples
An accounting practice can run the duplicate check on each client's purchase ledger before the month-end close. A retailer can compare the month-end count with system stock by store and warehouse. Finance reconciles the bank's OFX file with the ledger, confirms the suggestions and keeps the PDF as evidence. The quality team runs the monthly 5S inspection on a phone, with photos, and compares it with the previous one; prepares the FMEA for a new process; and selects, with a recorded seed, the documents internal audit will test.
Limits and responsibility
The Universal Auditor helps you find what deserves attention, but it does not replace professional judgement, review of the source documents or the standards and laws of your country. Findings are not proof of fraud, a definitive legal non-compliance, ISO certification or an independent auditor's opinion. The ISO 9001 self-assessment is educational and written in our own words. Sampling does not calculate a confidence level, and the Benford test is only an indicator with data suitability requirements.
Sample files and supported formats
Every audit has sample data with fictitious names and a button to download the sample spreadsheet as CSV, with headers in the page language. CSV files can use commas, semicolons, tabs or pipes, in UTF-8 or Windows-1252. Excel workbooks are read from the chosen sheet using the stored results of formulas, which are never executed. Reports can be downloaded as PDF, Excel and CSV, the latter protected against malicious formulas.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files sent to a server?
No. Reading and calculation happen in your browser and nothing from your spreadsheets, results or photos is transmitted. The page address only stores the type of audit you chose.
Where are audits saved?
In this browser's local storage (IndexedDB), with automatic saving. That history can be deleted if you clear site data or use a private window, so export JSON backups and restore them when needed.
Does the auditor say fraud has happened?
No. It points out indications, each with its rule, evidence and limitations. You decide, marking each finding as confirmed, dismissed or pending.
Does it work with other number and date formats?
Yes. The auditor recognises 1,234.56 and 1.234,56, day/month/year, month/day/year and year-month-day dates, and currencies by ISO code. When a format is ambiguous it asks you to confirm before comparing.
Does the ISO 9001 self-assessment issue a certificate?
No. It is an educational guide with our own questions organised by clause, to map evidence and gaps. Certification is only granted by certification bodies after their own audit.
Can I change language in the middle of an audit?
Yes. The audit is saved before switching and reopens in the new language with the same data, results, decisions and notes. Only in temporary mode is imported data not kept.
